Credit Repair 101: How It Actually Works
A plain-English overview of what credit repair is, what it can (and cannot) do, and how to start the right way.
Credit repair is the process of identifying and challenging inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable information on your credit reports. It is NOT a way to erase accurate negative history.
WHAT IT CAN DO
Remove items that are genuinely inaccurate or cannot be verified by the data furnisher.
Correct wrong balances, duplicate accounts, and accounts that are not yours.
Update outdated information past the legal reporting window.
WHAT IT CANNOT DO
Legally remove accurate, timely negative information.
Guarantee a specific score increase.
Replace responsible financial habits.
HOW THE PROCESS WORKS
1.Pull your three reports (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). You are entitled to free copies.
2.Review every line for errors.
3.Dispute inaccuracies in writing with the bureau and the furnisher.
4.The bureau must investigate, usually within 30 days.
5.Track responses and follow up.
A REALISTIC TIMELINE
Most disputes resolve in 30-45 days per round. Real improvement usually takes several months of consistent effort. Patience and documentation win.
