The 5-Step Dispute Strategy That Works
A repeatable, organized workflow for disputing errors across all three bureaus without losing track.
Disputing without a system leads to missed deadlines and duplicated work. Use this five-step loop.
STEP 1 — INVENTORY
List every negative or questionable item across all three reports. Note the creditor, account number, amount, and which bureau reports it.
STEP 2 — PRIORITIZE
Start with the items most likely to be inaccurate: accounts you do not recognize, wrong balances, duplicates, and items past the reporting window.
STEP 3 — DRAFT
Write a clear, factual dispute letter for each item. State what is wrong and what you want corrected. Avoid emotional language. (Credit Comando's letter generator does this for you.)
STEP 4 — SEND & LOG
Mail disputes and record the send date. Mark each as In Progress. The bureau generally has 30 days to respond.
STEP 5 — REVIEW & REPEAT
When you get a response, update the item status to Resolved or Rejected. For rejected items, escalate with a method-of-verification request or additional evidence, then loop again.
Consistency is the secret. One organized round per month beats ten frantic letters.
